World’s first blockchain-powered service of its kind enables transfers between e-wallets in Hong Kong and the Philippines

Ant Financial, Alipay, AlipayHK and GCash held a joint press conference at Island Shangri-la Hong Kong on June 25, 2018, to announce the launch of a cross-border real-time remittance service between Hong Kong and the Philippines.

The cross-border remittance service uses e-wallets from AlipayHK and GCash, and leverages blockchain technology to provide fast, secure, convenient, transparent and low-cost money transfers directly between individuals in Hong Kong and the Philippines.

Guests in attendance included Jack Ma (founder and executive chairman of the Alibaba Group), Paul Chan Mo-po (Financial Secretary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region) and Canning Fok (group co-managing director of CK Hutchison Holdings and chairman of Alipay Payment Services (HK) Limited).

The Ant Financial Services Group, which operates its Alipay online payment platform, sought the  SCMP’s help to plan and manage the Hong Kong event, synchronised with a similar one in the Philippines.

In Hong Kong, the SCMP team handled the venue booking, rundown design, on-site logistics, guest reception, production and third-party liaising.
