SCMP Updates
SCMP CEO Gary Liu has been in the United States outlining his vision and sharing insights in transforming a legacy media company into a digital media organisation. In an interview with Sinica at the China Institute in New York, he highlighted the driving forces and challenges in executing the SCMP’s digital transformation. He said the SCMP is fortunate to be in a position to invest in news and grow its newsroom, with the support of a committed owner. Liu is adamant the market needs high-quality news that separates fact from opinion and is also able to add insight and analysis. Liu said there are three major transformations driving the SCMP’s evolution: “First, culture and identity, second, structure and process, and third, product and technology”. Liu mentioned that AI-powered reporting technology will be introduced in a few years and it will free up journalists to develop content that AI is unable to handle. He said there will be a role for print newspapers for many years to come.
