South China Morning Post’s dedicated branded content arm creates dynamic video report and article to boost annual event’s global reach

Hong Kong – ranked as one of the world’s leading financial centres – is known around the world as an attractive innovation and technology hub for entrepreneurial talent and investors.

It is home to numerous start-up initiatives and a thriving investor community  – backed by billion-dollar investment from the Hong Kong government – with the Hong Kong Science Park playing a vital role in this evolution.

The park is administered by the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corp (HKSTP) – a public body set up in 2001 – which has built a vibrant ecosystem that connects stakeholders, nurtures science talent and facilitates collaboration.

November’s Elevator Pitch Competition 2019 (EPiC) – an annual international event where finalists pitch business ideas during a 60-second lift ride in Hong Kong’s tallest building, the International Commerce Centre – is one of HKSTP’s comprehensive incubation programmes.

With more than 70 per cent of this year’s 126 finalists – competing in the categories of Artificial Intelligence & Robotics, FinTech, Health Technology and Smart City – coming from overseas, the South China Morning Post (SCMP), with its global readership, was seen as the ideal media partner.

This year’s fourth edition of the competition – designed as a platform to compete, co-create and exchange – attracted a record 650 entries from 48 countries and cities, up 10 per cent compared with last year’s event.

More than 1,000 entrepreneurs, venture capital firms, angel investors, industry players, incubators and accelerators watched as the finalists –  start-ups with less than US$10 million in funding that launched less than five years ago – battled it out for prizes totalling more than HK$1 million (US$128,000).

The 10 best firms had the chance to give a three-minute pitch on stage to a panel of judges, including investors and industry leaders.

HKSTP called on Morning Studio, SCMP’s dedicated branded content arm, to capture the high-energy event – both visually and in words – by producing an action-packed and informative post-event video and crafting a branded article.

SCMP reported that the EPiC competition showed why Hong Kong remains attractive to tech start-ups – despite the city’s current challenges, including the pro-democracy protests and long-running US-China trade war.

The article highlighted how the city’s ’s abundant talent and capital pool and robust infrastructure continue to  attract and scale newly established international businesses.

SCMP also published a print ad and shared the branded content on its digital and social channels, including the SCMP Focus newsletter and SCMP Facebook and LinkedIn pages.
